Wat is body piercing en hoe wordt het gedaan?

Een lichaamspiercing is een piercing of klein gaatje in het lichaam gemaakt met behulp van een gesteriliseerde naald; een sieraad wordt normaal gesproken door het gat gestoken om het open te houden terwijl het geneest.

Hoe verzorg ik een nieuwe piercing?

Je piercingtechnicus is het best geplaatst om je te adviseren over hoe je voor je nieuwe piercing moet zorgen, maar als vuistregel moet je je nieuwe piercing minstens twee keer per dag schoonmaken, eerst je handen wassen en vervolgens de voor- en achterkant van de piercing reinigen met een wattenschijfje dat in een steriele zoutoplossing is gedoopt. Je moet ook voorkomen dat je je piercing aanraakt totdat deze volledig genezen is, en je moet proberen de piercing-sieraden niet te verwijderen, omdat dit ervoor kan zorgen dat het gat krimpt.

Hoe lang duurt het voordat een piercing geneest?

Sommige piercings hebben meer tijd nodig om te genezen dan andere; de meeste piercings hebben minstens 6-12 maanden nodig om voldoende te genezen om de sieraden te verwijderen zonder het risico te lopen dat het gaatje dichtgaat. Een goed advies: kies voor sieraden met een rechte paal (geen hoepel) voor je nieuwe piercing, omdat rechte palen minder beweging en minder irritatie veroorzaken, wat betekent dat je piercing sneller moet genezen.

Zijn er risico's of complicaties verbonden aan een piercing?

Ja. Infecties komen vaak voor als de goede hygiënenormen niet zijn nageleefd. Littekens, zenuwbeschadiging en de overdracht van hepatitis B en C zijn ook bekende risico's.
