Many people enjoy saunas on a daily basis, but if you’re healthy and new to them, try 1-3 sessions per week. You can increase the number of appointments once your body is used to them. If you have cardiovascular disease or low blood pressure, you should consult your doctor before using a sauna.
Your first few sessions should last no more than 5-10 minutes, but once you’re used to saunas, you can increase individual session time to 20 minutes.
Saunas sessions can bring many benefits: they increase your heart rate and boost circulation; they can reduce muscle tension, inflammation and stress; and they may help sufferers of asthma and psoriasis. Research also suggests that saunas may lower the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s.
You’ll lose a lot of water through sweat once you’re in a sauna, so help your body out by gradually drinking a pint of water in the run up to your session – it’ll help prevent dehydration. You should also shower before a sauna, and take time to relax.
Drink plenty of water: you’ll need to replace the fluid you lost through sweat, so drink at least 500ml-1l (2-4 glasses) of water after every sauna session.
