Laser resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure that uses concentrated beams of light to reduce facial wrinkles, scars, and blemishes. It works by removing the outer layer of skin (the epidermis) and heating the underlying skin (the dermis), which increases the growth of natural proteins called collagen fibres. This results in smoother, firmer, younger-looking skin.

Ablative lasers (such as CO2 and Er:YAG) remove the outer skin layer for more dramatic results but require longer recovery. Non-ablative lasers stimulate collagen beneath the surface without removing skin, offering more subtle results with minimal downtime. Fractional lasers offer a middle ground.

Laser resurfacing is typically safe when performed by a certified, experienced professional. But like with any cosmetic procedure, there are risks. Make sure to discuss your medical history and potential side effects with your dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon before your treatment.

The number of laser resurfacing treatments you'll need depends on your skin's condition. One treatment may be enough for some, whereas others may need multiple sessions for the right results. Discuss your skin's condition and treatment plan with your dermatologist for a clear idea of how many treatments you'll need.

Expect your recovery from laser resurfacing to take between one to three weeks, depending on the intensity of the treatment. During this time your skin may be raw, swollen, and itchy. Follow any aftercare instructions from your dermatologist, such as avoiding sun exposure and applying any prescribed creams to support the healing process.

Recovery varies by treatment intensity. Non-ablative treatments have minimal downtime (1–3 days of redness). Ablative resurfacing can require 1–2 weeks of healing. Sun protection is critical during and after recovery.
