What is henna and how is it used for tattoos?

Henna is a plant-based dye derived from the pigment in henna tree leaves. To harness the pigment, the leaves are dried, ground into a fine powder, and blended with oil or water to create a paste. It’s this paste that’s then piped onto the skin to create a henna tattoo.

How long does henna last?

Henna dye tends to last 2 weeks before it starts to fade. However, the longer you leave your newly applied henna on your skin before washing, the more time it has to be absorbed, and the longer it lasts.

What are the design options for henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos are often a combination of repetitive designs. Some are simply decorative, some are spiritual and symbolic. They can range from paisley and lotus flowers, to vines and snakes.

Are there any risks associated with henna tattoos?

Natural henna is brown or olive in colour and is generally safe to use, but we always recommend doing a patch test first, to see how your skin responds to it. Be careful: black henna (also known as PPD) is a chemical version of henna; it is banned for use on the skin in some countries, because it can burn and damage the skin.

Can I make my own henna paste at home?

Yes. There are recipes for making your own henna paste, but to avoid risk and error, we recommend buying a henna kit from a reputable retailer, or having your henna tattoo done by a professional henna tattoo artist.
