Jill is a magician!! The New York winter and water had killed my curls, but Jill brought them back to life. So very professional and taught me about my hair and styling, while also keeping my preferences top of mind. The space is clean and modern, and the Self team were so wonderful.

It was my first visit and it was lovely. I love my hair, I love the staff, I love my stylist (Lauren), I love the way the products smell, I love the way everything looks inside, I love their organization and the way they handle business. If I wasn't moving next month, this would be my permanent salon, but unfortunately I'm leaving New York. :(

Ruben is the man! I hadn’t gotten a haircut in over two years, so I was a little nervous about making a big change. He took the time to look through my reference photos, asked the right questions, and made sure he understood exactly what I was going for. He absolutely nailed it. He’s great with curly textured hair and beards, and you can tell he really pays attention to the details. I walked out feeling fresh, confident, and honestly better than I expected. I had a phenomenal experience! The stylist and salon staff were all super welcoming and good energy. The stylist ran through my hair, made sure I was comfortable and gave me intentional recommendations based on my needs. I was very nervous - especially as someone who is a hijabi and has Lupus- my hair has been a sensitive spot for me. However, on Sunday mornings they made sure to accommodate and make sure there were no men! She also was extremely knowledgeable of the medication I take for Lupus and how it can impact hair health. Overall, it was amazing and I will def be back!

It was my first time at Hayato. Although it looked a bit dated, the service was exactly what I was looking for. Great shampoo experience and Mina my hairdresser was a super Japanese stylist. She listened to what you wanted and then offered her opinion. Highly recommend for a true New York Japanese hair salon. Thank you!

I was a walk in. I was warmly welcomed & wonderfully helped. While the stylist finished up with someone, I sat on the comfy couch in the rear of the salon. Jamal, and his assistant Talia, are extremely kind, utterly professional, thorough and an absolute joy with whom to spend the afternoon. Jamal is a wizard with sensitive hair, and fixed my damaged hair so that it looks and feels healthy and amazing!! It was a great blessing to find them; I only wish they were in New Jersey :-) so I shall have to go up to New York many many times in the future!!

The shop is very welcoming, clean and has a very positive vibe. I came to the shop because Master Barber Jan Dogar recently joined the team and he has been cutting my hair for the last several months. His work is thorough, consistent and thoughtful. I am an older guy with not that much hair, so it is crucial to me what I do have looks as good as it can. Jan totally gets it and does an outstanding job. His expertise and kind, friendly demeanor make for a great experience overall!
