Deep Tissue massage evolved as a popular term for a strong and firm massage. The benefits of deep tissue massage therapy are similar to Swedish massage, but the deeper pressure is beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons, and fascia - the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints. Other deep tissue modalities are Neuromuscular Therapy, Rolfing, and Trigger Point Therapy, to name a few.

Medical massage is outcome-based massage, primarily the application of a specific treatment targeted to the specific problem(s) the patient presents with a diagnosis and are administered after a thorough assessment/evaluation by the medical massage therapist with specific outcomes being the basis for treatment. It is also known as clinical massage or treatment massage. 

Medical Massage

The most widely recognized and commonly used massage is the Swedish massage. Techniques vary from light to vigorous and have been shown to reduce pain, joint stiffness, and improve function in patients with osteoarthritis, and, effectively reduce lower back pain. Swedish Massage causes a reduction in cortisol levels indicating its role in the management of stress and mood improvement.

Developed to help with muscle systems used for a particular sport, sports massage uses a variety of approaches to help athletes in training -- before, during, or after sports events. You might use it to promote flexibility and help prevent injuries. Or, it may help muscle strains, aiding healing after a sports injury.

Sports Massage

This technique focuses on pain arising from myofascial tissues, the tough membranes that wrap, connect and support your muscles. Myofascial release focuses on stretching and manual pressure that loosens restricted motion.

Myofascial Release therapy

Shiatsu Massage is an alternative technique that involves manual pressure applied to specific points on the body in an attempt to relieve tension and pain. According to the Japanese healing treatment, Shiatsu (meaning finger pressure) massage uses thumbs, fingers, elbows, and knees to concentrate pressure at certain energy pathways in the body called meridians. The massage also known as acupressure works to reduce muscle tension and fatigue and is thought to improve blood circulation in the body as well as improve the function of the lymphatic system.

Shiatsu Massage

Thai massage or "Thai yoga massage" is a traditional healing system combining acupressure, Indian Ayurvedic principles, and assisted yoga postures. Traditional Thai massage uses no oils or lotions. The recipient remains clothed during treatment. There is constant body contact between the giver and receiver, but rather than rubbing on muscles, the body is compressed, pulled, stretched and rocked.

In Ashiatsu, the practitioner uses their feet to deliver the treatment. This modality offers deep relaxation but also energizes your body and senses. The name comes from the Japanese, ashi for foot and atsu for pressure. This technique typically uses the heel, arch, toes and/or whole plantar surface of the foot, and offers large compression ideal for large muscles, such as in thigh, glutes, trapezius and back muscles in general.

A lymphatic drainage massage is a form of gentle massage that encourages the movement of lymph fluids around the body. The fluid in the lymphatic system helps remove waste and toxins from the bodily tissues. Some health conditions can cause lymph fluid to build up.

Craniosacral Therapy is an alternative medicine treatment intended to relieve pain and tension by gentle manipulations of the skull, spine, and sacrum regarded as harmonizing with a natural rhythm in the central nervous system. It is frequently used as an adjunct to other forms of treatment, including migraine headaches, chronic pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, trauma of any kind, post-surgical recovery, TMJ, and others.
