Dry Needling FAQs
Dry needling involves the insertion of fine needles into the skin and muscle tissue to reduce muscular and trigger-point pain.
Side effects aren’t common, but could include bleeding or bruising at the needle insertion points. You may also experience dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, and an increase in pain for 24-48 hours after your treatment. If you’re concerned, ask your therapist to talk you through the risks and side effects before your appointment.
Evidence isn’t conclusive, but dry needling is believed to be effective in reducing mild to moderate muscle pain.
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medicine which has been around for centuries, unlike dry needling which has only been available in recent years. Both acupuncture and dry needling see thin needles inserted into the skin or muscle to treat pain. However, dry needling is only used to treat muscular pain, whereas acupuncture treats a range of physical and psychological conditions, and clears blockages in the body’s energy flow (qi) to improve overall health.
The insertion of needles stimulates blood flow and cellular repair, however dry needling is likely to cause your muscle to cramp and twitch involuntarily. This is normal, and known as the local twitch response.
