Does dry needling hurt?

You may feel a local twitch response when the needle hits a trigger point: a brief, sharp sensation followed by muscle relaxation. Most people experience some muscle soreness for 24–48 hours after treatment, similar to post-exercise soreness.

What are the risks of dry needling?

Side effects aren’t common, but could include bleeding or bruising at the needle insertion points. You may also experience dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, and an increase in pain for 24-48 hours after your treatment. If you’re concerned, ask your therapist to talk you through the risks and side effects before your appointment.

What happens to your body after dry needling?

The insertion of needles stimulates blood flow and cellular repair, however dry needling is likely to cause your muscle to cramp and twitch involuntarily. This is normal, and known as the local twitch response.

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique used by physiotherapists and other qualified practitioners where fine needles are inserted into trigger points (tight muscle knots) to release tension, reduce pain, and restore normal muscle function.
