Deep tissue massage is a specific method that employs techniques to work on the low superficial connective tissue with the intent of breaking up old structural patterns and allowing the free flow of nutrients and oxygen to the blood. 

It also requires the therapist to apply a considerable amount of pressure, communication between the therapist client ensures work client's comfort zone is maintained during the session.

The therapist uses movement to release chronic muscle tension through slow and deep strokes, applying more direct pressure or friction across the grain of the muscle.

The therapist detects restricted, stiff, knotted, or painful areas by assessing the quality and texture of the deeper layers of musculature and slowly working into the deep layers of muscle tissue.
