Lymphedema occurs when tissues retain the fluid that remains after the cardiovascular system sends blood to the tissues and organs.
The remaining fluid is called lymph. Normally, the lymphatic system collects the lymph and returns it to the heart through a network of lymph vessels and lymph nodes. When something interrupts the lymphatic system's process, the lymph collects in the feet and legs, swelling them.
A massage therapist uses lymphatic drainage massage techniques to move lymph from the tissues to the lymph nodes, which relieves tissue swelling and improves circulation. Includes leg and foot treatment.
