An Atlanto-occipital (AO) joint between occiput to first cervical vertebra (atlas) is responsible for forward bending of neck (flexion) and backward bending (extension), if this joint is stressed/ the muscles of neck get tense and painful. AO release will help to relax the neck muscles.
The atlantoaxial joint. The joint between the C1 and C2 vertebrae is called the atlantoaxial joint. Unlike other vertebral joints, the atlantoaxial joint does not have an intervertebral disc. This joint is secured by a thick, strong ligament called the transverse ligament.
