A blow dry can refer to any professional drying of the hair after washing, while a blowout is a more intentional styling service with a specific finish in mind, smooth and polished, or voluminous and bouncy: using professional tools and products.

Do I need to wash my hair before getting a blow dry?

Ideally. Unless your stylist is doing it for you. Oily hair can flatten hair, so it’s best to have a blow dry after your hair’s been freshly washed.

How do I prepare my hair for a a blow dry?

Wait until your hair is at least 80% dry before you start blow drying it, and prep it first with a heat protectant. Use a volumising heat protectant if your hair is fine, a smoothing one if your hair’s prone to frizzing, and a leave-in conditioner if your hair is curly. You should also untangle any knots and section off your hair with clips before you begin your blow dry.
