What is a wig installation?

It’s a procedure to professionally fit a wig to your head. Different techniques are used depending on your hair length and type, and type of wig you choose.

How long does a wig installation take?

Installation time largely depends on the technique used to secure your wig. Sewing a wig in place takes between 3-6 hours. In contrast, it takes less than an hour to install a lace front wig using special adhesive, and around an hour to install a full-lace wig and a 360 wig.

What types of wigs can be installed?

Lace front (frontal) wigs, full-lace wigs, and 360 wigs.

What is the process of installing a wig like?

The installation of your wig is dictated by your hair’s length, texture and thickness, the wig you choose, and the installation technique you go for. Full-lace, lace front, and 360 wigs tend to require your hair to be absolutely flat before the wig is applied; this is achieved by braiding your hair into cornrows, or by wearing a wig cap. Next, a special adhesive (tape or glue) is applied to the outer perimeter of your hair (ensuring no glue touches your own hair), the wig fitted to your head and fixed in place with clips to allow the glue to bond. Excess lace is trimmed off, and makeup may or may not be used to help blend the lace edge with your skin to create a natural-looking finish. If you’ve opted to have your wig sewn-in, you’ll swap the adhesive stage for stitching the wig in place.

Are there any risks or side effects associated with wig installation?

Yes. Risks include blocked pores, allergic reactions, itching, and hair loss. You should carry out a patch test at least 24 hours before your wig installation to check if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the adhesive and any other components being used.
