A prenatal massage is an adapted form of the Swedish massage that accommodates your change in shape whilst ensuring maximum relaxation. Your massage therapist may ask if you have particular aches and pains you’d like them to try to address during the massage to help relieve any discomfort.

Side-lying massage is the standard positioning for safe pregnancy treatment. Browse and book the best trained pregnancy massage therapists near you on Fresha.

Prenatal massages are specially adapted massages for pregnant women, typically involving cushioned support to safely accommodate the body’s changing shape. Prenatal massages can help reduce stress hormones, increase blood circulation, and promote physical and emotional relaxation. They may also help relieve insomnia, neck and back pain, sciatica, headache, and swellings.

When you go for a conventional massage, you’ll usually lie down on your stomach for some, or all, of the treatment. This isn’t possible when you’re pregnant, so your therapist will use cushions to support your new shape enabling you to lie safely on your side or back. The massage technique will differ slightly, too; rather than applying any deep tissue pressure, your masseuse is likely to use long, sweeping strokes and work on the areas of your body that will benefit the most.

Prenatal massages can ease some of the discomfort pregnancy can cause, plus they have the added benefit of helping you relax. The massage can also alleviate swelling, improve mood, and relieve depression and anxiety.

When performed by a therapist trained in pregnancy massage, prenatal massage is generally safe from the second trimester onwards. Most therapists do not massage during the first trimester. Always inform your therapist of your stage of pregnancy and any complications or medical conditions.
