A personal trainer is a professionally qualified fitness coach who creates bespoke fitness programmes for their individual clients based on each client’s personal goals (e.g. weight loss, muscle gain). They will instruct, demonstrate, and advise you to use specific equipment (resistance, weights, machines etc.) or practise movements that simply relies on your own body weight to help you improve your fitness levels.
Word of mouth referrals are great, but if you don’t have the luxury of knowing someone with a brilliant personal trainer (PT), do your own research. It’s advisable to check their level of qualification (the more advanced, the better), look at online reviews, and ascertain if their style of coaching (e.g. gentle or militant) will suit you.
You are likely to do a mix of cardiovascular and aerobic exercise during your personal training session. It will start with a warm up and end with a cool down to stretch out all the muscles you’ve been working. How your session is structured, and the exercises you do during it, will depend on your goals and fitness level.
How often you have a personal training session will be dictated by your goals and what you can afford. A single session a week could be plenty, but if you’re new to exercise you may want to start off with 2-3 weekly sessions to help you develop your form and get a sustainable routine.
