Although gel manicures look beautiful, they can cause your natural nails to become brittle. The American Academy of Dermatology reports that repeated use of gel nails can increase the risk of skin cancer and the premature ageing of skin on the hands.
Gel and shellac nails both cure under UV light, but their composition is different. Acrylic nails are stronger than gels and start to cure as soon as they’re exposed to air; they generally last for 6-8 weeks but will need fills after 2 weeks to hide regrowth. Both can be used to lengthen nails and both can damage your natural nails.
