Yes, particularly if you’re having your upper lip, neck or pelvic area done. You’re likely to feel a stinging sensation or pinch of heat from the electrolysis probe, but the level of pain depends on your pain threshold.

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method of permanent hair removal. A fine probe is inserted into each hair follicle and a small electric current is applied to permanently destroy the follicle's ability to regrow hair. It works on all hair colours and skin types.

Your practitioner should advise you on aftercare, but you’ll be encouraged to sterilize and soothe your skin with aloe vera, diluted tea tree oil or something similar; and to apply a cold compress to reduce inflammation. Pain relief can be taken if you continue to experience discomfort. You should also avoid the sun, swimming pools, rubbing, scratching and over-touching the treated area immediately after the treatment, and steer clear of make-up, exercise, alcohol-based skin products, and waxing, too. Ask your electrolysis technician to explain in detail what you should and shouldn’t do post treatment.
