Professional ear piercing uses sterile, single-use needles or specialist piercing tools to create openings in the ear for jewellery. A professional piercer ensures correct placement, sterile technique, and appropriate starter jewellery to support healing.

Earlobe piercings heal in approximately 6–8 weeks. Cartilage piercings (such as helix, tragus, or daith) take considerably longer, up to 6–12 months. Following proper aftercare is essential to avoid infection and ensure a good heal.

Cartilage piercings require precision and expertise. Browse and book experienced cartilage piercing specialists near you on Fresha.

You can avoid subsequent infections and hole closures by leaving your earrings in for at least six weeks after your initial piercing. Remove an earring earlier, and the pierced hole may close over. You should also be strict on hygiene after you’ve had your ears pierced: wash your hands before touching your ears, clean and rinse your piercings with salt water or a mild, fragrance-free soap and water at least once a day, and apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly around each opening. If in doubt, your piercing technician should be able to advise you on how to take care of your newly pierced ears.

Clean twice daily with sterile saline solution, avoid touching with unwashed hands, don't rotate or change the jewellery during healing, and keep the area dry. Your piercer will provide detailed aftercare instructions based on the specific piercing.

Ear piercing typically costs between £20 and £40 including starter jewellery, depending on the type and location of the piercing. Fresha shows upfront pricing before you book.
