You can avoid subsequent infections and hole closures by leaving your earrings in for at least six weeks after your initial piercing. Remove an earring earlier, and the pierced hole may close over. You should also be strict on hygiene after you’ve had your ears pierced: wash your hands before touching your ears, clean and rinse your piercings with salt water or a mild, fragrance-free soap and water at least once a day, and apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly around each opening. If in doubt, your piercing technician should be able to advise you on how to take care of your newly pierced ears.
