What is permanent makeup and how does it work?

Permanent makeup (aka micropigmentation) is a cosmetic procedure that uses a fine needle to deposit ink pigments into the deeper layers of the skin in a similar way to tattoos, but with the goal of creating long-lasting makeup-style effects around the eyes, lips and face.

How long does permanent makeup last?

The length of time your permanent makeup lasts hinges on what you have done and how well you care for your skin. Microblading and permanent eyeliner last 1-3 years, lip blushing lasts 3-5 years, scar camouflage lasts 2-5 years, and freckle tattoos can last for up to 10 years. You’re likely to need touch-ups for all permanent makeup treatments.

Is permanent makeup safe and do I need to take any precautions?

Some countries don’t regulate permanent makeup as an industry, so for your own peace of mind on safety, do your research. Check your practitioner’s qualifications and experience: look at online reviews, and ensure they work in a clean, safe environment. If you’ve got a specific medical condition or have some upcoming medical treatment booked, you may want to ask your doctor if it’s safe for you to go ahead with a micropigmentation procedure. As with all tattoos, there’s a risk of allergic reactions, scarring, and infection.
