How does IPL hair removal work and is it effective?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light technology) hair removal uses a device to direct strong pulses of light at pigment in unwanted hair; this sends a rush of heat down the hair’s shaft, damaging or destroying the cells that cause it to grow. You’re likely to need more than one treatment, but the results are effective and permanent.

Is IPL hair removal safe for all skin types?

No. For IPL to work, the device needs to be able to distinguish between the colour of your skin tone and the colour of your hair; it’s therefore not recommended for use on black skin, nor for those with red or light blonde hair. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or if you have a known medical condition, check with your doctor if it’s safe for you to try IPL hair removal.

Does IPL hair removal hurt and is it a permanent solution?

It depends on your individual pain threshold; any discomfort you feel is likely to be short-lived because IPL devices tend to work quickly, giving you little time to register pain. Results are permanent, but you’ll need more than one session to stop all hair regrowth in the treated area.

How many sessions of IPL hair removal are needed for optimal results?

It’s likely to take 6-10 treatments to see the best results; and you’ll need to leave 4 weeks between each session.

Can IPL hair removal be used on all areas of the body?

Almost. You can use IPL hair removal anywhere on the body except the eyes and intimate areas.

What should I do to prepare for an IPL hair removal session?

You should stay out of the sun for 4-6 weeks before your session, and avoid plucking, waxing and bleaching the hair you want treated for at least 4 weeks before your treatment. You’ll also need to remove all fake tan to avoid pigment burning, and exfoliate and moisturise daily (except for the day of treatment). It’s advised not to use any topical creams or deodorants on the day of your session.
