Reiki is roughly translated as "spiritually guided life force energy", which means it's purpose is to help you connect to your true-self, your divine essence. It is a form of self-care, a way of allowing yourself time to be still, to rest your body and mind, and to cleanse yourself of all energy that isn't serving you. Stagnant energy can cause illness, physically and mentally, and so by allowing yourself time to connect to yourself you enable a healthier flow of energy.
