Hot stones, when used during massage, allow the massage therapist to utilise the basic Swedish massage techniques including long strokes, kneading, rolling, tapping, and circular movements, just with rocks instead of their hands. The basalt stones are heated to a uniform temperature in a special heater.  The high iron content of the stones makes them excellent at retaining heat. Your therapist will use different sized stones depending on the area of the body being massaged.  The heat from the stones penetrates into the muscles and helps loosen them up so the therapist can provide a deeper and more relaxing massage quicker.
