Microlocs are typically 6–9 mm in diameter, which is smaller than traditional dreadlocks, which are usually 10 mm or larger. Microlocs can go through four stages of maturity: Starter/baby lock: The parting and loc are established. Budding/teenage: The hair begins to bud or loosely mat, and the locs may swell and frizz. Shooting/adult: The locs can swell to double their original size, and the hair may shrink in length. Contracting/elder: The hair becomes denser, the ends seal, and there is minimal to no frizz. On average, it can take up to 2 to 3 years for microlocs to fully mature
